Open Record:

The South Korean’s best performance in this championship came in 2007 at Carnoustie when Choi lay second after two consecutive rounds of 69. The weekend scores tailed off slightly but a T8 finish, only four shots back from the eventual winner Harrington, was commendable. There was also a T22 finish at St George’s in 2003; not many of this year’s contenders have any sort of track record at Sandwich so that’s enough to be in his favour. Two consecutive missed Open cuts is less impressive however.

Form:

Having an excellent 2011 in which the highlight has so far been victory in The Players Championship - widely regarded as golf’s unofficial fifth major. A second place at the AT&T National and a T3 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans are further reasons why KJ sits third in the FedExCup standings. A T4 and a T8 finish in his last two trips to the US Masters show he can handle the big stage.

Verdict:

One of the leading performers on the other side of the Atlantic, Choi could well be a decent each-way bet at 50/1. His record on links courses is admittedly unspectacular, but if he starts well then he should be expected to be thereabouts come Sunday. It’s only two months since the biggest win of his career in the Players Championship so he won’t be short on confidence.
