British Open Profile: Jim Furyk

Furyk: Still hungry

Nearly did the business in the recent US Open and has bags of experience.

Best Odds: 50/1 (Skybet)
Age: 42
World Ranking: 32
Best Results in Open: 4th - 1997, 2006 & T4 - 1998

Open Record:

Despite missing five cuts on the bounce in the early 2000s, ‘The Grinder’ can also boast five top-10 finishes in this championship. Although a clutch of his best results came in the 1990s, there have also been decent more recent showings. The best of late was a T5 at Birkdale in 2008.

Form:

The most interesting thing about the 42-year-old is that he seems to be peaking for the majors these days. The 2003 US Open champion had a competitive 11th at Augusta and came much closer to glory at Olympic Club in June. Furyk shared a two-shot lead heading into the final round before a 74 ruined his chances.

Verdict:

The sort of player who gets forgotten in the pre-tournament hype but nobody is surprised if he’s thereabouts come Sunday. His best days may be behind him but one suspects he is desperate to join the far more prestigious two-major club. Unlikely to panic if he gets on the leaderboard over the weekend.
