British Open Profile: Graeme McDowell

McDowell is a fan of links golf

The 2010 US Open champion has shown he has the temperament for the big occasion.

Best Odds: 25/1 (Boylesports)
Age: 33
World Ranking: 7
Best Result in Open: T5 - 2012 & T11 - 2005

Open Record:

Last year was the first time G-Mac made a significant splash in this Championship in nine attempts. He had not been hopeless, three previous top-25 finishes testified to that, but a prolonged spell on the leaderboard had proved elusive. But that all changed at Lytham where the Northern Irishman began the Sunday in the final pairing before blowing up with a 75.

Form:

Absolutely bizarre. The 2010 US Open champion has lurched relentlessly from the sublime to the ridiculous this season and back again. In the plus column are three victories, including most recently at the French Open, which put him 2nd in the Race to Dubai rankings. But on the flip side there have been six missed cuts, including Augusta and the US Open.

Verdict:

Which McDowell will show up at Muirfield? He was so poor in the first two majors of the year that it’s hard to believe that 2012 represented his finest all-round campaign in the big four events. But arriving off a four-shot triumph in France surely can’t hurt and he seems to be winning every time he contends. With that in mind, a bet ‘on the nose’ looks wiser than each-way!
