SPOTY 2012 Betting

It was a golden year for British sport but the BBC has managed to narrow the list down to 12 candidates.

In any ordinary year Andy Murray would be a shoe-in for Sports Personality Of The Year, but a US Open title, an Olympic Gold and Wimbledon final appearance is only enough to make him the 10/1 (Blue Square) third favourite.

The shortlist is dominated by Olympic and Paralympic Athletes, with Rory McIlroy the only sportsman who didn’t compete at London 2012. The world number one won his second major, topped both money lists and was part of the victorious Ryder Cup team but is an outsider at 125/1 (Boylesports).

Bradley Wiggins heads the betting at 2/5 (Bet365). He is Great Britain’s most decorated Olympian along with Sir Chris Hoy but his exploits in winning the Tour De France make him favourite.

Of the outsiders, David Weir looks overpriced at 40/1 (Coral) after winning four gold medals at the Paralympics. Three honours on the track plus marathon gold made him a household name this summer.
