Abu Dhabi GP Tips: Low Retirement Rate

The Yas Marina circuit has a historically low retirement rate the bookmakers haven’t adjusted for.

The Abu Dhabi GP isn’t normally much of a spectacle; overtaking is difficult and the race can turn into a procession. Don’t worry – there is a way to alleviate the boredom and make some money.

The Yas Marina circuit produces a high number of finishers, only the European GP at Valencia has a lower number of retirements. Since Abu Dhabi joined the F1 calendar in 2009, only 9 cars have failed to finish from the 68 that started; 87% of drivers reach the chequered flag.

When compared to the seasonal mean over the last three years, Abu Dhabi has 20% more classified drivers than average. In 2012, 85% of drivers have been classified at the end of the race. Factor in the 20% uplift from Abu Dhabi and you would expect almost all the drivers to finish.

Bet365 are offering odds of 21/10 on there being more than 21 classified drivers and that looks excellent value. The bet would have been landed 7 times from 17 grand prix this season. That is the equivalent of 2.43 (in decimal odds), but we are getting 3.1 (decimal odds) at one of the least attritional circuits on the calendar. It all adds up to being cracking value.
