Ireland Top Goalscorer: Euro 2012
1st Jun, 2012 16:06
Some footballers are built for the big stage, and luckily for the Republic of Ireland one such man is Robbie Keane. The well-travelled striker has a remarkable 53 international goals to his name and looks a bargain at 7/2 (Coral) to top score for the Emerald Isle again in Euro 2012.
Keane’s one previous experience of a major tournament came in 2002 at the World Cup staged in Japan and South Korea. He played a starring role as Ireland drew with Germany and qualified from their group. The former Spurs man bagged three goals in his four matches to top score for his nation.
Cynics will point out that this was a long time ago but Keane is still doing the business more recently. The 31-year-old found the net six times in qualifying to yet again reaffirm his status as talisman.
In a competition where people expect the Irish to struggle, Keane is likely to only need one or two goals to win us our bet. It’s hard to imagine a different forward in the squad going on a goal blitz with so few international strikes between them. Kevin Doyle (10), Shane Long (7), Simon Cox (3) and Jon Walters (1) continue to live in the captain’s shadow.
