Men's Wimbledon Final: Djokovic v Murray Tip

Britain has had a Centre Court monkey on its back since 1936; today it may finally be wrenched off.

The day may have finally arrived. I think Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s Wimbledon champion can end this afternoon, or possibly this evening, as it may take a while. Andy Murray is a best price 11/2 to win in five sets and I’m convinced that’s good value.

The case for Djokovic is, of course, a fairly easy one to make. The world number one lifted the trophy in 2011 and has claimed six Grand Slam titles to Murray’s one, and he has the heart of a lion.

But the one Grand Slam in the Scotsman’s locker is key to why he has a better chance than last year. Murray triumphed in five gruelling sets at Flushing Meadows against the Serbian to show that he can win the biggest matches against the very best.

If there was only a mental block stopping Murray 12 months ago, it appears to have been lifted as soon as the 26-year-old stormed to Olympic Gold on Wimbledon’s Centre Court last August. En route to the final he beat Djokovic 7-5 7-5 in what is the pair’s only previous meeting on grass.

The decisive factor in this final could even be what happened on Friday. While Murray beat Janowicz in a relatively comfortable four sets, Djokovic was put through the ringer by Del Potro before he finally prevailed in the longest semi-final in Wimbledon history.

The world number one did nearly twice as much running as Murray in the semi-finals and physicality may be crucial on a scorching hot, and potentially momentous day, at SW19.
