US Open Men's Winner Tip: Roger Federer

The five-time US Open champion is perfectly poised to roll back the years one more time with Nadal absent.

With defending champion Rafa Nadal absent through injury, world number one Novak Djokovic is desperately trying to dampen expectations having been made the overwhelming favourite for the US Open title (8/5 Sportingbet).

This talk is inevitable given that the Serbian is almost obliged to try and take the pressure off himself in this way, however, in this instance he is justified. Although we successfully tipped Djokovic to win Wimbledon earlier in the summer, his form since has dramatically fallen away. In August, he has exited in Toronto and Cincinnati at the third-round stages.

It seems the 27-year-old may currently be slightly distracted by off-court life changing events as he has recently married while a first child is impending. With Andy Murray a potential quarter-final opponent, Djokovic’s odds are too short to be tempting here.

Furthermore, Britain’s number one may be available at 8/1 (Betfred), but having not won a tournament since Wimbledon 2013, he is best overlooked as well. The toll of back surgery and the upheaval of changing coach remains a burden.

Instead, the best bet for Flushing Meadows success must be Roger Federer. The 17-time Grand Slam champion is on imperious form having just triumphed in Cincinnati and having made another Masters Final in Toronto before that.

The Swiss master is resurgent in 2014 and could yet end the season as the world number one. He has won three titles, came really close at Wimbledon, and has taken 12 top-10 scalps. This time in 2013 he had only one top-ten victory for the year.

Federer’s draw is also kind with the highest seed he is likely to face up to the semis being David Ferrer whom he holds a 16-0 record over. There is nothing for him to fear before the final and that is why we should take the 5/2 Ladbrokes offer on the 33-year-old going all the way.

He is available at a best price of 11/4 (Coral), but Ladbrokes will give you your money back as a free bet (up to £25) if your selection loses in the final.
