Shanghai Masters Tip: Andy Murray

The Olympic and US Open champion now has the highest ranking positions in his sights.

If the bookies are going to keep making Novak Djokovic nothing longer than 7/5 (totesport) to win tennis tournaments then I’ll keep opposing him. It’s not to be disrespectful to the Serbian, but there’s no way Andy Murray should be 3/1 (Boylesports) for the Shanghai Masters, an event he’s won two years running.

The new US Open champion is having the best year of his career and has little to fear in head-to-heads against Djokovic these days. Murray has won the big matches that count lately; not just the final at Flushing Meadows but also the Olympic semi-final at Wimbledon in August.

Overall Murray has won 4 of the last 6 clashes with Djokovic and 7 of the last 11. Admittedly, the Brit will probably have to overcome Roger Federer (7/2 Boylesports) in a semi-final but he beat the Swiss 6-3 6-2 here in 2010 to claim the trophy. And he’s a better player now.

A recent blip in the Japan Open semi-finals is no recent to lose faith in Murray. He paid off handsomely for us in New York and now he’s gunning for another Masters title as he hunts down the number one ranking spot.
