York Tips: Secret Witness

Close fifth over course and distance last time out; fared well having chased an overly strong pace.

The key bit of form needed to unlock the 2.50 York was a race over course and distance 16 days ago. Several of the field return to do battle again including the winner Monsieur Joe.

Having studied the video numerous times, I’ve reached a couple of conclusions. The race was run at a strong gallop, the first two home came from off the pace and although sectionals timings are difficult to take at York, I estimated the finishing speed to be 92.2%.

My sectional par for the track is approximately 95%, which means the runners were finishing more slowly than usual, possibly indicating a strong early pace.

Of the front-runners, Secret Witness did particularly well to finish fifth, only 2.25 lengths behind the winner. The 8-year-old chased the pace throughout and was slightly unlucky when short for room in the final furlong.

York seems to suit him, he’s won at the track before and with the Ron Harris yard starting to send out winners again he could run a big race at 12/1 (Betfred).
