Wolverhampton Tips: Alben Star
Slack early pace of the Cleves Stakes didn’t suit his running style and probably needed the outing after a 4 month break.
Alben Star only beat three horses home in the Cleves Stakes last time but the form is unlikely to be reliable.
For a Lingfield sprint it was run at a pedestrian gallop, the finishing speed was 109.6% of the average speed and the top-3 after a furlong filled the top-3 positions at the line.
The race became a 2f dash for home with 7 runners dipping below the magical 22.0s mark.
Alben Star was one of those seven but his performance was meritorious because he raced from much further back and was three wide for most of the race. His final 2f of 21.54 was fourth quickest in the race.
After the contest trainer, Richard Fahey intimated that he needed the run after a 4-month break so I expect an improvement in the 2.15 Wolvehampton.
Alben Star finished fifth in last year’s renewal, again slightly unlucky the way the race unfolded.
On the pick of his form, he is as good as anything in this field and at 16/1 (William Hill) is a cracking bet.
