Winter Derby Sectional Preview

Grandeur comes out top on speed ratings and sectionals but if he suffers trouble in running from stall 14, Robin Hoods Bay could pick up the pieces.

Form coming into the Winter Derby (3.50 Lingfield) is hard to gauge with plenty of horses coming straight from Dubai but thanks the Trakus sectional data at Meydan we are able to gain a valuable insight into their performances.

Grandeur is equal top on speed ratings and considering his last performance came over course and distance, he is the horse to beat. Capable of running to a mark of almost 120 he should win but a tricky draw in stall 14 and a short price encourages me to look elsewhere.

Sectional upgrades are few and far between, Dick Doughtywylie dominated from the front in a slowly run race for his win, leaving Robin Hoods Bay as the only viable alternative.

Ed Vaughan’s horse finished fourth in the race won by Grandeur but he matched the winner’s time over the final two furlongs. Robin Hoods Bay started his run from further back than Grandeur and although he did not make up any ground he didn’t lose any either.

On sectional timings there isn’t much between the pair and in stall 9, Robin Hoods Bay has much the better draw. There is no denying Granduer is capable of running quicker based on past form, but if he suffers from trouble in running then Robin Hoods Bay is a good value option.

The 6-year-old was runner-up in the Winter Derby last year and with a bit of luck at 14/1 (William Hill) he might go one better.
