Welsh National Tips: Shotgun Paddy

Handles soft/heavy ground, has won over the trip, previous course winner and has a touch of class. Just needs to defy top-weight.

Shotgun Paddy is friendless in the betting for the Welsh National (2.35 Chepstow) on account of carrying top-weight but put that aside for a moment and his claims are excellent.

Emma Lavelle has targeted this race all season and even gave him a spin over hurdles last time to protect his handicap mark.

All four of his wins have come on soft or heavy ground and the 7-year-old has stamina in abundance.

Around this time last year he won a competitive Grade 3 handicap at Warwick over 3m5f all the more impressive because he was still classed as a novice chaser.

This afternoon’s trip and ground should pose no problems and he’s also got good course form to his name. The undulations at Chepstow make it a tricky course to master but Shotgun Paddy has finished 131 in three visits to the Welsh track.

Carrying 11-12 makes life trickier but he’s got weight because he’s theoretically the best horse in the race. In reality he could be even better. At 10/1 (Bet365) he is a decent bet.
