Topham Chase Tip: San Benedeto

A much better horse in the Spring as he proved when taking a competitive race at Newbury last time. Has some classy form to his name and not handicapped out of things.

San Benedeto comes alive in the Spring and although we missed him at a juicy 11/1 last time out his mark of 154 isn’t insurmountable. Runner-up behind Altior in the Celebration Chase last season, he has some classy form to his name.

More recently Paul Nicholls has been able to stretch his stamina to 2m4f and it was good to see him win at Newbury in a big handicap run at a true gallop because that is what he will face in the Topham.

Taking on the Grand National obstacles is an unknown but San Benedeto won on the Doom Bar Novices’ at Aintree in 2017, so he handles the track if not the obstacles!

From March to June his record is 8/14 as opposed to 2/23 spanning October to February. This is indeed his time to year and he can overcome a rise in the handicap to win again.
