Take Cover At Haydock
Big price considering he won a Group 2 sprint last season and featured in all the big 5f races.
It pains me to oppose Pretend (now a non-runner) in the Temple Stakes (3.45 Haydock) because he was one of my favourite horses on the all-weather but this is a different test and I’d like to see more turf form before going in at a shortish price.
Instead the value lies with another sprint favourite of mine – Take Cover.
He might be an 8-year-old and come from a small yard but he’s a terrific sprinter.
Before last year’s win in the King George at Glorious Goodwood I’d earmarked him as a potential Group 1 performer.
He could only finish eighth in the Nunthorpe but he was only beaten 2 lengths and got upset in the stalls before hand and banged his head quite badly.
He finished the season with a close sixth in the Abbaye and he is a big price for a top-class 5f sprinter.
