Southwell Tips: Waking Warrior

Wide margin winner at the track as a two-year-old and has more scope than his rivals.

The 5.00 Southwell is a good looking sprint but quite quickly the field can be whittled down.

West Coast Dream, Six Wives, Cadeaux Pearl, Monsieur Jamie, Ghostwing, Mottley Crewe and Sir Geoffrey all look exposed. They have been running creditably over course and distance but have been beaten in the better races. Baby Strange and Haajes are stronger on turf and Fair Passion isn’t good enough.

That leaves one horse left – Waking Warrior. He is the selection by process of elimination but he is a worthy bet in his own right.

A precocious two-year-old, he then lost his way at three, a common story with many sprinters. The fact that he has stayed with Kevin Ryan suggests the trainer still rates him highly. His only win came at this track in a maiden, but it arrived with consummate ease.

Racing after a 143-day break their might be some rustiness, but I would expect the horse to have improved over the winter. This is one of his easiest tasks to date and at 6/1 (Ladbrokes) he can win on the way to better things.
