Southwell Tips: Starfield
Showed excellent early speed when winning on his first Fibresand start and will be hard to peg back despite the rise in grade.
Starfield looks like a Southwell specialist in the making and he can improve his record to 2/2 in the 2.25 contest.
His last win on the Fibresand was impressive; he made virtually all from stall 14 setting an almost unsustainably strong early gallop.
Starfield covered the first 5f (of a mile race) in an average of 12.3s per furlong; that was the quickest early speed of the meeting, which included a class 6 sprint over 6f.
The 5-year-old did remarkably well to keep going because his finishing speed was 95.1% of his overall speed, which indicated he was slowing down at the finish.
The race probably took a lot out of him because he was well beaten on his next start but returned to Southwell I expect an improved showing.
He has to contend with a hike in grade this afternoon but this isn’t the strongest 0-85 handicap around. I doubt anything can match Starfield’s early pace and he can make every post a winning one at 15/8 (William Hill).
