Southwell Tip: Filbert Street

Not stood much racing but one of his best efforts was over course and distance. Set overly strong gallop after long-lay off when well beaten at Wolverhampton but did show bright early speed.

Filbert Street has only stood four races in his young career but there are reasons to be optimistic about his chances in the 1.35 Southwell. Arguably his best run came over course and distance when fifth in a maiden around this time last year.

He’s not done much since but returned from a 361-day break to finish 11th at Wolverhampton. It is a run that needs upgrading because not only was it after a long lay-off but he also set an unsustainable gallop. His lack of sharpness, the pace and 6 furlongs all exacerbated the margin of defeat.

His front-running style should be suited to the all-weather; he’s run well on the Fibresand before and Roy Brotherton might be able to get a win out of him.
