Southwell Tip: Astro Jakk
Mightily impressive course and distance winner. Displayed bright gate speed and a strong finish, ideal for the track. Couldn't back it up 24 hours later at Newcastle but easily forgiven.
Astro Jakk was well beaten on his last start but there are several good reasons to forgive him. Firstly it came 24 hours after producing a big effort (and winning) at Southwell and secondly he tried to cut out the running over a stiff 6f. The sectionals showed a horse tiring in the final 2f and with good reason.
The 4-year-old is still lightyl raced and a believe the minimu trip will be his forte. His wide margin win at Southwell came thanks to a rapid opening 3f and yet he was still the fastest closer; thus producing a quick time for the grade. His running style is ideally suited to 5f on the Fibresand and his record at the track is 1281.
This is a step up in grade but there are no superstars in the field, it reads more like a class 3/4 handicap and he looks like the winner.
