Southwell: Ornate
Course and distance record is 23112 and ran excellent race at Newcastle (Tawny Port one length behind) when possibly going to hard in the early part of the race. May last home on easier track.
The 3.55 Southwell looks a straight shoot-out between Ornate and Tawny Port. They are the top two rated horses in the field and between them they have 4 wins in 7 starts over course and distance.
There is little to separate them at the weights therefore you have to take a view on their Newcastle race, where the was a length between them. Ornate came out on top that day and I fancy him to confirm the placings. Southwell’s 5f is sharper than at Newcastle and he arguably did too much last time because his finishing speed was considerably slower than par.
Stall 6 is potentially awkward but he’s got good gate speed and early pace that cannot be rivalled. If he hits the lids he might never be headed.
