Southwell: Centurion Song

Never raced on the Fibresand but trainer enjoys 17% strike rate at track. Suffered a terrible trip last time but not beaten far and has been running well in better grade of races.

Pouring through the form for the 6.30 Southwell there doesn’t appear to be many Fibresand specialists in the field. Those that have finished in the places at the track have done so with underwhelming speed rating which leads me to thinking outside the box.

Centurion Song has the strongest all-weather form on offer and therefore i’m chancing him on his Fibresand debut. He clocked an adjusted speed rating of 71 behind Gowanlad a month ago and has shaped well since, in good races for the grade.

Last time out he suffered a terrible trip, tightened for room early in the race he lost his position and was forced to close from rear, which he did with the fastest closing sectional despite finding trouble in running. Clearly that run deserves upgrading and i’m happy to see the blinkers return as he cannot afford to be sluggish in the early part of the race over a sharp, pace favouring 5f.

Brian Meehan enjoyed a 17% strike rate (33-196) at Southwell, so he know what type of horse you need to win on the Fibresand. That gives me enough confidence to take a risk with Centurion Song.

*Returned 9/1
