Sandown Tips: Spirit Quartz
Class act who finished second in last year's Nunthorpe. Won twice this season and excuses for his three defeats.
Spirit Quartz has to give weight to most of his rivals but I expect his class will tell in the 2.05 Sandown.
Dutch Masterpiece and Duke of Firenze are both on the upgrade but they have some way to go to match Robert Cowell’s five-year-old. Remember this is a horse who finished second in the Nunthorpe.
Spirit Quartz has won two of his five starts in Europe this season, including an impressive Group 2 victory at Chantilly when his jockey hit the front too soon after chasing a blistering early gallop.
As for his three defeats, all of them were excusable. At Newmarket, Haydock and Ascot he was beaten because of the draw and forced to race away from the action. Reasonably drawn in stall 5 there can be no excuses this time.
