Royal Ascot Tips: Royal Rock

Two-time winner at Ascot, handles ease in the ground and almost back to his best after illness.

The sensational Black Caviar is the star turn in the 3.45 Royal Ascot and it is a real treat to watch her race on these shores. At 2/9 (Paddy Power) there is little merit in backing her but there is plenty of value in the race.

For each-way purposes there are still two places up for grabs and with very little separating these sprinters a big price could land a top-three finish. Royal Rock generally saves his best for Ascot and at 66/1 (Bet365) he is the each-way value.

After missing most of 2010 through illness, it took a while for Royal Rock to regain his form but his last six runs have been encouraging. He finished 2011 with two wins, including a Group 3 triumph, and a close fourth place behind Deacon Blues at Ascot. He had Night Carnation, Genki, Jimmy Styles and Society Rock all behind him that day and they re-oppose on Saturday.

This year he ran well against a strong pace bias at Doncaster to finish fourth, whilst his last run over 7f on good to firm ground can be ignored. At his best over 6f with cut in the ground, he has ideal conditions in the Diamond Jubilee. There is little chance that he beats Black Caviar but with ¼ odds for a top-3 finish, backing him each-way at 66/1 (Bet365) still leaves us with a decent payout.
