King’s Stand Tips: Ahtoug

Finished ahead of Shea Shea and Sole Power at Meydan but is curiously underrated by the market.

The 3.45 Ascot is a strong renewal of the King’s Stand Stakes with last year’s 1-2-3 joined by the exciting Hot Streak, who took the Temple Stakes on his last start.

Predictably the bookmakers have the quartet at the top of the market but they’ve made a pricing error with Ahtoug.

The Godolphin sprinter is closely matched with Shea Shea on Dubai form and I don’t understand the difference in price.

On World Cup night, Ahtoug ran a huge race to finish a neck behind Amber Sky in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint.

It was a particularly impressive performance because Amber Sky is a top-class sprinter and they went a strong pace from the off.

Sectional data from Trakus shows Ahtoug covered the 400m to 600m split in 9.75s, which is seriously quick. He paid for this big move at the end of the race but was still able to see off the fast finishing Shea Shea.

The 6-year-old has improved over the winter and given he’s a past course and distance winner he deserves to be near the head of the market, not 14/1 (William Hill).
