Ripon Tips: Roger Thorpe

Ripon Tips: Roger Thorpe

Bolted 30-lengths clear in first time headgear at Nottingham but not beaten far under the circumstances.

Roger Thorpe ran one of the most peculiar races I’ve seen in a while when he bolted 30-lengths clear in an apprentice race at Nottingham. I’m not sure you can blame Benjamin Sanderson, although he might lack experience his mount was not for stopping and almost certainly lit-up by first-time cheek-pieces.

Roger Thorpe’s finishing speed was 96.3% of his average race speed, which means rather predictably he was slowing down at the finish. However, considering the inefficient use of energy he did really well to only be beaten by 2.75 lengths and record a respectable speed rating in the process.

This evening the headgear is left off and if Marc Monaghan can set fractions that are more sensible, he could land the 8.55 Ripon
