Portland Tip: Duke Of Firenze

Plenty of classy form to his name and been unlucky at least twice this season. 12lbs lower than when ninth in this a year ago and potentially well drawn around early pace.

In the Racing Post David Griffiths, trainer of Duke Of Firenze is quoted as saying, “He’s a massive price on his fourth in the Prix L’Abbaye last year and we’ve ironed out some issues. The race should suit him as they go flat out and he likes to come with a late effort.”

A bullish assessment for a horse price up at 33/1 - and he is right.

Duke Of Firenze has some smart form to his name and although he hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory there have been excuses. In the Epsom Dash he finished sixth but would have been much closer granted a clear run and the same excuse is valid at Newmarket in July, where he clocked the fastest closing sectional in another luckless race.

Since then he’s run badly at Goodwood when weaving all over the track and was then outclassed in the King George Stakes. That has served to bring down his mark and he is now 12lbs lower than when ninth in this race last year. This intermediate trip probably suits him better given his advancing years and potentially well drawn around early pace.

At 33/1 he is a good each-way bet with 6 places on offer with William Hill.
