BetVictor Gold Cup Trends

BetVictor Gold Cup Trends

We examine the trends of past BetVictor Gold Cup winners (formerly the Paddy Power) and whether weight, age or course form have an impact.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a valuable handicap and an early season target for shrewd connections and trainers.

Pundits often talk about the ‘type’ of horse you need to win a Paddy Power; therefore we’ve taken three prominent factors and put them to the test.

Age

With £91,120 for the winner, the Paddy Power Gold Cup attracts improving horses looking to exploit a handicap mark and win a big pot before moving onto bigger and better things.

Ten of the last twelve winners have been aged six or seven, generating a positive impact value (wins expressed as factor of wins that could be expected to occur by chance).

Looking at all runners (not just winners) sees the 6 to 7 age group come out on top, with the bracket beating 55-56% of all rivals.

Official Rating

To win a race of this calibre you usually need to be hiding something from the handicapper and the numbers reflect this. Horses rated 150+ have a poor winning record and impact value.

In terms of all runners, there is an even spread between the bands; those rated 140-149 beat the most rivals (51%) but only by a small margin.

Previous Course Winners

If you believe in ‘Cheltenham horses’ you will be heartened by the figures.

Eight of the last twelve winners had previously won at the track (1.33 IV) and course form is valuable throughout the field. Previous Cheltenham winners beat 54% of their rivals in the BetVictor Gold Cup.
