Nunthorpe Tips: Muthmir

Nunthorpe Tips: Muthmir

Won the King George at Goodwood in the second fastest time since 1980 and loves a pure test of speed.

‘Speed Kills’ is the familiar phrase on British road signs but perhaps on the approach to the Knavesmire it should read Speed Wins.

Even accounting for the going, the 5f at York should be covered in under 58s and the race is a true speed test.

After winning the 2013 edition, Robert Cowell said of winner Jwala, ‘She has a huge turn of foot and a high cruising speed. Those are the ingredients you need for a real good sprinter’.

That seems an accurate assessment but who fits the bill?

There are several worthy candidates but the best of the lot could be Muthmir.

Last time out he won the King George Stakes at Goodwood in a rapid 56.08s, the second fastest winner since 1980.

It is a race that has been a good signpost to the Nunthorpe in recent years with La Cucaracha, Kingsgate Native, Borderlescott and Ortensia winning both races during the last ten years.

If you look at Muthmir’s record it’s hard to crab his form. Racing over 5 or 5.5f his record is 1131, his only defeat coming by half a length in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot.

This looks the ideal race for him; he is drawn amongst the early-speed horses and is a great bet at 6/1 (Bet365)
