Newcastle Tip: Rathbone

Not many miles on the clock and campaigned as a sprinter in first two seasons. Two good runs over 7f at Newcastle show he handles the track and drop in trip plus blinkers could help him win.

Kevin Ryan and Mrs Angie Bailey could enjoy a successful afternoon at Newcastle but not with Brando in the Chipchase; their more likely winner is Rathbone earlier on the card.

Like so many sprinters Rathbone showed promise as a juvenile, lost his way slightly as a 3-year-old before looking good again as a 4-year-old. It’s not like last season was bad by any means, he won twice but then struggled in deep handicaps.

He started this calendar year with two good performances at Newcastle. He was slightly unlucky when second behind Glen Shiel, the leader setting a moderate gallop and hanging on despite Rathbone clocking the fastest closing sectional by 0.29s. They are drawn next to each other again and Glen Shiel could set the pace for those drawn low.

Both Rathbone’s runs at Newcastle came over 7f but he showed a good turn of foot and the blinkers could eek out some extra performances. He clearly likes the track and is unexposed on the surface.
