Lucida Can Bag A Group 1

Lucida Deserves A Group 1

Placed in two Group 1s this season and slightly unlucky on both occasions. Can make her 3-year-old allowance pay.

The 3.15 Newmarket is a fascinating contest not just because it is a Group 1 but it pits together two stand-out sectional horses from Royal Ascot.

Lucida finished third in the Coronation Stakes but ran a 34.39s sectional (107.5% finishing speed) the fourth quickest 3f sectional on Ascot’s round course from the last 266 runners.

Amazing Maria did something similar, winning the Duke Of Cambridge by running a closing 2f sectional of 23.49 (109.2% finishing speed), the fourth fastest 2f sectional on the straight track from the last 284 runners.

So who is better?

Unfortunately, it is difficult to compare sectionals from the straight and round track due to different camera angles but of the two I’m sticking with Lucida.

Not only has Lucida run fast sectionals but her overall speed ratings are good whereas Amazing Maria has only moderate speed ratings and is dependant on slowly run races, so she can unleash her turn of foot.

Traditional form study also has Lucida well ahead. She finished second in the 1000 Guineas and gets a useful 3-year-old allowance.

The Falmouth Stakes is a battle of the sectionals but also a lesson to never use information in isolation. At 5/2 (Betfred), Lucida is the bet.
