Long Distance Cup Tips: Forgotten Rules

Dermot Weld knows how to win this race and his lightly raced 4-year-old has shown enough to suggest he is worth a crack in this company.

The Long Distance Cup (1.45 Ascot) brings together the usual names in the seasonal finale.

Thanks to the TurfTrax website we are able to analyse the field in detail because most have run at a track with sectional timings.

Unfortunately the sectional timings are all rather mundane. Estimate deserves credit for her second place in the Lonsdale Cup; the sprint finish didn’t play to her strengths but otherwise you get what you see with these horses.

With no standout performer or hidden sectional upgrade the race looks wide open.

Dermot Weld won the race two years ago with Rite Of Passage and he has a similar type in Forgotten Rules.

Completely unexposed after two starts (one a national hunt flat race) he could be anything, but given the connections he’s probably quite smart.

At Galway, he received an RPR of 109 for his wide margin victory and he wouldn’t need to improve much to beat the majority of this field who are rated in the mid 110s at best.

Leading Light is the horse to beat but he’s run poorly on soft ground before and his price makes him prohibitive. The value therefore lies with Forgotten Rules at 7/2 (Bet365).
