Southwell First Excel: Load Up Excel

First Excel has been backed overnight but the move is understandable. He showed ability on debut and his trainer has a good record at Southwell.

There been a massive overnight move for First Excel in the 2.00 Southwell and it is easy to understand why.

He caught the eye back in May when fifth at Thirsk on debut. He looked very green, blowing the start and then swerving right but he got the hang of things and motored home in the fastest closing sectional.

He failed to build on that promising debut in maidens at Doncaster and wasn’t seen again all summer. After a lengthy break he returned to the track on the 19 January and finished seventh in an above average race for the grade.

The 4-year-old should improve for the run and there is every chance he improves for a switch to the Fibresand. Trainer Roy Bowring has a 13% strike rate (25-193) at Southwell and the market move suggests he’s worked well at his local track.

The 9/2 (Bet365) might be on the skinny side but we can expect a slight drift before the off, so place the bet with a best odds guaranteed bookmaker.
