Land A Touch

Innocent Touch help set a ludicrously strong gallop last time but somehow managed to finish second and record a big speed rating for the grade.

Innocent Touch has been going up the handicap this season without winning, which is not usually a good sign but a 4lb rise for his second place at Carlisle underestimates his run.

Lit-up by a first time visor, Innocent Touch blasted out of the gates and it was almost 3f before Jack Garritty managed to get a lead.

Unfortunately, the dye was cast and the new front-runners duelled and pulled the pack along at an equally strong pace.

The result was a race run at a furious early gallop with a slow motion finish. Innocent Touch’s final 3f was 92.9% of his average race speed, which means he was slowing down markedly.

Considering the lopsided pace, it was amazing that he still hung on for second and recorded a big speed rating in the process.

Richard Fahey has given him time to recover from that effort and if he races with the same zest he might be difficult to pass from a favourable draw.
