Kempton Tips: Purple Spectrum

Ignore he is last performance; he went off too fast and probably needed the run after a 2-month absence.

At first glance, Purple Spectrum looks a no-hoper in the 6.50 Kempton after he was beaten 24 lengths on his last start.

However, look a little closer and a case can be made for the 3-year-old.

Last time out, Stevie Donohoe simply misjudged the pace. He was still leading with 3f to go but he went through the first 9f approximately 10-lengths quicker than par.

Combined with having his first start in over 2-months, it is understandable why Purple Spectrum blew-up and finished near last.

Forget that run and he has decent claims at this level. He won a class 3 handicap over 1m6f at Sandown in the summer and shaped like a horse who would get better over further.

He finished second over 2-miles in soft ground at Newmarket and a return to that trip looks ideal.

Stevie Donohoe should be able to dictate the race from the front and he could prove difficult to pass at 28/1 (William Hill).
