Kempton Tips: In The Spotlight
Expensive yearling who’s found herself extremely well handicapped for new yard. Fastest closer by 0.74s last time out.
January is probably a bit early to be proclaiming ‘bet of the year’ but we might have to wait a long time to find a better handicapped horse than In The Spotlight.
Having exchanged hands for 100,00 Euros as a yearling Henry Spiller has got a bargain, picking her up for 7,000 Guineas out of Richard Hughes’s yard.
On her first start in 4 months she ran a fine race to finished second behind Magdalene Fox at Wolverhampton. Held-up in rear from a wide draw, she was further back than ideal as the winner controlled the tempo from the front.
Despite the pace handicap, In The Spotlight was still travelling strongly turning for home and despite being forced to switch, quickened well with a 22.88s closing sectional. That is fast in absolute terms but also 0.74s better than anything else in the field.
In defeat, I gave her an adjusted speed rating of 75 and she doesn’t even need to come on for the run to make a mockery of her handicap mark of 62.
