Kempton Tips: Charlie Wells

His ability over 2 miles is unproven but nothing can match his finishing speed if he has enough petrol left in the tank.

You wouldn’t expect Charlie Wells to be hiding much from the handicapper having finished no worse than fourth in his last nine starts but he’s run better than the bare form.

Last time out he came from a hopeless position to finish third; quickening well as the gallop increased. The 3f finishing speed was 110.1% of the average race speed; everything was finishing quicker than par, thus favouring those that raced prominently.

Charlie Wells needs a strong pace so he can deliver his turn of foot but peculiarly Eve Johnson Houghton has stepped him up to two miles.

If anything he needs a step down in trip to find a stronger pace but his full sister was a winner at 12f, so perhaps there is some untapped stamina in his constitution.

If Charlie Wells gets the trip, then noting will be able to match his burst of speed at the finish. At 15/2 (Stan James) we are well rewarded for the risk.
