July Cup: Oxted

Fine winner of the Abernant and a good time becomes even more impressive when you adjust for the steady pace and the fact he probably wasn't 100% race fit.

The July Cup features the protagonists from the Diamond Jubilee but that was a blanket finish and i’m happy to oppose all of them. The race was only ok from a time perspective and there are better sprinters in this field. Equilateral could be outstanding if able to stretch out to 6f but I’m shocked Oxted is forgotten by the betting public.

He started out as a handicapper but we’ve seen many horses progress through the sprinting ranks and he has relatively few miles on the clock. He ran a good time when winning the Abernant and adjusting for sectionals gives him a speed rating of 109. That puts him right in the mix and I agree with assertion from Roger Teal that he’d come on for the run. He made a big move two out and then seemed to get tired in the final 100 yards, when the race was run.

Skipping Royal Ascot was a sensible plan if he needed to recover from the exertions and he arrives at Newmarket with an excellent chance.
