Grand National Tips: Vintage Star
Faller last time out but a rare aberration from this usually sound jumper. Hails from last year’s winning yard and should relish the test.
On a non-descript Monday afternoon in November I remember watching Vintage Star win a graduation chase at Carlisle and putting him in my notebook as a potential Grand National horse.
Fast forward five months and he lines up at Aintree at 66/1 but his chances are considerably better than his price.
He’s been largely ignored by the market because he fell on his last start but that can happen to the best of horses. It is harsh to judge him on one mistake because throughout his career he’s been a very good jumper.
Stamina shouldn’t be a worry for the 8-year-old who finished a gallant second in the Peter Marsh chase at Haydock over 3m1f.
His only disappointing run of the season was a 13-length defeat in the Welsh National but the ground was very testing that day.
Under the expert tutelage of last year’s winning trainer Sue Smith, he looks a great each-way bet at 66/1 (BetVictor) with ¼ odds for a top-6 finish.
