Grand National Tips: Twirling Magnet

Best on a left-handed track with good ground; Aintree therefore ideal. Lacks experience but was an eye-catching winner three starts back.

With recent winners priced at 100/1, 66/1 and 33/1, the casual punter could argue the Grand National is a lottery and he/she would probably be right!

To win the race you need a modicum of good fortune because when you combine 40 runners and some big fences, accidents happen.

Like any lottery if you are going to win - you want to win big, so for my second selection I have started at the bottom of the market and worked my way up.

Using this ‘back-to-front’ method the first horse that catches my eye is Twirling Magnet. He might not fit the age profile of recent winners but he is a horse with ability and hails from a shrewd yard.

When racing on left-handed tracks on ground no worse than good to soft (conditions he will face at Aintree) his records is 12F1251U.

The best of these finishes came at Cheltenham in October when staying on strongly to win a useful novices’ chase.

Since then he’s struggled, getting outpaced by classier animals at Ascot and then unseating at Cheltenham, although his most recent mishap came in an amateur riders race.

However, on the pick of his form he shouldn’t be 100/1 (Boylesports) and that is reason enough to back him each-way, especially with 1/4 odds for a top-5 finish.
