Grand National Tip: Seeyouatmidnight
Injury and bad weather delayed comeback but got crucial prep in at Newbury. Has some smart form and better than a mark of 149. Finished third in 2016 Scottish National.
Seeyouatmidnight is bidding to give Scotland consecutive victories in the Grand National and lightning could strike twice. The 10-year-old recently returned from injury at Newbury, a necessity because the rules state a horse must have a run over fences this season before competing in the National.
Seeyouatmidnight ran well for a long way at Newbury before understandably tiring but it served as a good prep and trainer Sandy Thomson is pleased with his charge.
Racing off a mark of 149, the handicapper could be made to look silly because Seeyouatmidnight has some seriously good back-form. He beat Bristol De Mai in a match race at Carlisle in 2016 and beat Blaklion in the Dipper Chase at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day in 2016.
At his best he is capable of running to a rating in the low 160s, considerably better than his mark. Having finished a close third in the 2016 Scottish National the trip shouldn’t be a problem and although the Grand National fences are an unknown, he’s been a sound jumper in the past. With a bit of luck Scotland could be celebrating another win.
