Grand National Tips: Holywell

Finished fourth in last year’s Gold Cup and races off a lenient handicap mark given his exploits.

Having already tipped Kruzhlinin for the Grand National I have to add the horse who finished ahead of him at Cheltenham – Holywell.

The 9-year-old was well fancied for the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Festival but was out-sprinted up the hill by the useful Un Temps Pour Tout. Because the Grand National is an early closing race, his handicap mark remains unchanged and a rating of 153 is generous for a horse that hit 163 last season.

It wasn’t that long ago that Holywell was thought of as a Gold Cup horse, he finished 9.25 lengths behind Coneygree last season when sent off 8/1.

It has taken a while for Holywell to find his form again but most of Jonjo O’Neill’s runners struggled early in the new year and are only just coming to hand again.

Holywell has that touch of class needed in a high quality renewal of the Grand National and is a good each-way bet at 18/1 (Boylesports) with 1/4 odds for a top-5 finish. .
