Goodwood Tips: Huntsmans Close

Won a Windsor handicap that has worked out extremely well. Undone by a lack of pace on his last start but that shouldn’t be a concern in a 25-runner race.

Pace is spread evenly across the draw for the 2.05 Goodwood therefore it’s difficult to predict which side, if any, will be favoured.

With 25 runners there should be a strong gallop and that will suit Huntsman Close. Last time out at Epsom he did phenomenally well to get within 1.25 lengths of the winner having been seven lengths down as they crossed the path 3.58f furlongs from home.

His finishing speed of 111.4% is substantially quicker than par and probably means the early gallop wasn’t strong enough. This view is confirmed by Roger Charlton’s website where pre-race he stated:

“In an ideal world he would be suited by a flat out gallop so that he could cruise through and win! With a small field he is unlikely to get it, but he is in good form and maybe his number will come up.”

We know the horse has plenty of ability after he won a hot handicap at Windsor in April, the second, third, fourth and fifth horses home all won within their next two outings.

At Goodwood he is guaranteed a big field and should get a strong pace which makes his price attractive at 28/1 (BetVictor).
