Gold Cup Tips: Many Clouds

Many Clouds has silver lining

Has displayed the tactical variety to win under a range of pace scenarios, the hallmark of a champion.

Not only is the Gold Cup (3.20) the blue riband event of the Festival it’s also a great betting heat with a favourite that must be taken on.

I’m not crabbing Silviniaco Conti’s ability, that isn’t in dispute, but we’ve almost certainly already seen the best of him.

Noel Fehily gave him a perfect ride in the Betfair Chase and King George. His finishing speed was close to 100% of his overall speed, which is an ideal distribution of energy.

On a stiffer track, where he’s failed before and with Coneygree likely to hassle him upfront, he could be taken out of his comfort zone.

With a favourite to take on, there are a couple of juicy prices on offer and the first of my selections is Many Clouds.

Unlike Silviniaco Conti, he has shown versatility in his triumphs this season. He won a stamina testing Hennessy run at a solid gallop but also showed the speed to win a steadily run BetBright Chase at Cheltenham.

On ratings, he looks capable of running to the mark of 170+ needed to win a Gold Cup and at the peak of his powers he is a good bet at 8/1 (Bet365).
