Gold Cup Tip: Bristol De Mai

Capable of huge performances, seemingly limited to Haydock but that might be coincidence. At his best fresh. When racing after a 50+ day break he's beaten 93% of his rivals.

Bristol De Mai - the Trey Mullinax of National Hunt race. Both are loved by BettingBias but frustrate often as much as they excel but they WILL have their moment; hopefully this week.

The problem with Bristol De Mai is that he is a world-beater in the Betfair Chase and then everything unravels. Perhaps he is a Haydock specialist but I think the situation is more nuanced. Nigel Twiston-Davies talks about the horse being fragile and perhaps his poor performances are health related. The key to Bristol De Mai might not be Haydock but catching him after a break.

Since moving to the UK his record after a 50-day absence is 1221121 off a shorter break his record is 32312111222375163F. When looking at rivals beaten it is 93% after a 50+ day break but only 64% off a shorter break.

Falling at Kempton wasn’t an ideal preparation but the 79-day break was. Only those close to the stable will know how fit and well he is but when he’s sound he is imperious. I’m happy to take the chance at 16/1.
