Epsom Tips: Elna Bright

Unexposed at the trip and looks well handicapped. Gives the impression the trainer has targeted this race for a while.

Baldemar warrants respect with three wins at the track but he isn’t hiding anything from the public; at bigger odds the potential plot horse in the 5.25 Epsom is Elna Bright.

Although seven-years-old, he is relativity unexposed at sprint trips. He has tackled six furlongs 11 times in his career, winning three. He also looks well handicapped, racing off a mark of 85, despite winning off 90 on the all-weather this winter.

The style of racing at Epsom should suit the horse. He enjoys coming off a strong pace and he proved he could handle an undulating, downhill track when running well at Goodwood last year.

Interestingly, he appeared to have a prep race at Windsor last week. It was his first run in 115 days and it looked like he needed it. He was never put into the race, with his jockey happy to stay at the back of the pack. He stayed on nicely near the finish and was beaten 5.25 lengths without being given a hard race.

Having never won after a lay-off of 60+ days, trainer Peter Crate must have been keen to get a run into the horse before going to Epsom. All the evidence suggests this race was targeted a while ago; it is the owner/trainer’s local track and at 14/1 (William Hill) I think he can land a gamble on Derby day.
