Epsom Oaks Tips: Amazing Maria

It has been hard to find the winner of the Epsom Oaks (4.00) in recent years, the last three winners returning an SP of 20/1. With 17 runners going to post this year’s renewal looks equally tricky.

There are several horses with strong claims at the top of the market but I’m taking a risk and going with an outsider - Amazing Maria.

We’ve not seen her race this year as she was struck down by the bug in Ed Dunlop’s yard but the stable have turned the corner in recent weeks and she could upset a few big names this afternoon.

She first caught my eye when she demolished a decent maiden at Glorious Goodwood. She ran out a six-length winner but her sectional timings were fascinating.

The first thing to note is Amazing Maria ran a quicker time than Toormore and was about a length slower than Garswood’s victory in an all-age Group 2 contest.

Remarkably she clocked a good time despite running in an inefficient manner. The early pace was moderate (especially compared to Toormore’s race) and she sprinted away from her rivals in the last 2f, making them look distinctly ordinary.

She’s clearly a very smart filly and would have run a big race in the 1000 Guineas but can she stay 1m4?

She might not get the trip but races around Epsom can be tactical affairs and her sharp turn of foot might help her establish a lead turning for home. At 20/1 (William Hill) she is worth the risk.
