Epsom Dash Tips: Lady Gibraltar

The market for the 3.15 Epsom Dash is favouring horses with early pace and a high draw. I would agree with this angle in a small run of the mill handicap but the Dash is a special case.

The obsession of getting an early lead to the determinant of everything else is dangerous because it ignores the nuances of pace. Go too fast and you won’t win and to make matters worse a tiring horse on the rail will hamper everything behind it.

If Even Stevens goes haring off like he did at York he could ruin the race for everything around him.

The value is often found going against the crowd and in stall five, Lady Gibraltar is primed for a big run.

All her best form is on downhill tracks, she won at Lingfield, Goodwood and Epsom and she looks stronger than ever.

She ran a fine race on her seasonal reappearance, beaten only 2.75 lengths in a good handicap at York. She travelled beautifully through the race before tiring in the last 150 yards, perhaps a lack of race fitness and chasing an overly strong pace told.

The visor was left off at York but returns at Epsom and this is a deliberate ploy. She has finished 412 when the visor has been refitted after a short absence, often timed to coincide with a big pot.

From a wide draw, Joey Haynes should be able to keep the filly out of trouble but still close enough to the front-runners to pounce in the last 100 yards and win at healthy 25/1 (Bet365).
