Dundalk Tip: Battalion

Dundalk Tip: Battalion

Came from rear in a steadily run handicap at York to finish a good fifth under top weight. Should be even better in a small field on the AW.

Battalion must give weight to a couple of highly regarded 3-year-olds in the 7.35 Dundalk but there is a chance he causes a minor upset.

Last time out he finished fifth in a handicap at York but it was a peculiar race because despite 16 runners they went no pace at all. This wasn’t good news for Battalion, who fell out the stalls and was marooned in last place. With 3f to go he still had no-one behind him but made eye-catching progress up the home straight.

I get the impression that nowadays Battalion is a better horse on an artificial surface. He ran well in two Listed races at Lingfield last winter and he’s got a potent turn of foot, ideal for steadily run contests in small fields on the all-weather.

William Haggas wouldn’t waste his time sending a horse to Ireland if it wasn’t the right race and Battalion is one to keep onside.
