Doncaster Tips: Doc Hay

Well handicapped on old form and his victory at Beverley was a triumph over circumstances; trip too far, finished tired but still won by six lengths.

Racing off a mark 13lbs lower than his last handicap victory, Doc Hay looks well treated in the 5.35 Doncaster.

This former Listed winner has been out of sorts all season but appeared back to form when winning a claimer by 6 lengths on his last start.

That alone makes him a worthy favourite but his win at Beverley deserves closer inspection.

Connections tried a change of tactics and Ian Brennan rode Doc Hay much more prominently than normal, it appeared to be successful but sectional timings suggest otherwise.

Doc Hay tired markedly in the second half of the race, he covered the final 3f in a pedestrian 40.9s and his finishing speed was 91.2%.

He’d never tackled a trip as far as 7f100y and the front-running tactics meant he finished very tired. To still run a good time for the grade and win by six lengths is a sterling effort under the circumstances.

Doc Hay’s class got him through and back over a sprint trip, we should see further improvement at 10/1 (Stan James).
