Coral Eclipse Tips: The Gurkha

Coral Eclipse Tips: The Gurkha

Lost St James’s Palace Stakes by letting Galileo Gold get first run off an ordinary gallop. Ryan Moore can atone for his error.

By his very high standards Ryan Moore didn’t enjoy a good Royal Ascot and his ride on The Gurkha was one of the low-lights.

Held-up in rear, he allowed the leaders to set an ordinary gallop (103.6% finishing speed) and when he tried to bridge the gap, he ran into traffic problems.

Giving moderate horses a head-start isn’t ideal but letting the 2000 Guineas winner get first run off a steady pace is a recipe for disaster. To his credit The Gurkha ran the fastest closing sectional by 0.26s but the race was over.

The Gurkha should have no problem stepping up in trip and he’s already proven on soft ground. A wide margin winner of the French Guineas, he is a top-class horse and can make up for his Royal Ascot disappointment with victory in the Eclipse.
